Campus journalists from different organizations gathered together for the first-ever university-wide journalism workshop, spearheaded by Centro Dalumat in collaboration with the CEU Manila University Student Council (USC) and Circle of Voicers last Saturday, March 16.
With the theme “Preserving Journalistic Conventions and Exploring the Depths of Journalism,” the said workshop aimed at engaging student-journalists with hands-on experience from various speakers, encouraging them to explore different approaches to journalism.
Sittie Faizah Abbas, editor-in-chief of Centro Dalumat, conveyed her heartfelt appreciation to the attendees for their participation and for devoting their time and energy to attend the workshop in her welcoming address.
Part of the distinguished speakers who graced the event was Dr. Cecilia Suerte Felipe, a senior reporter and writer at The Philippine Star, and a respectable professor under the Communication and Media program.
Her engaging talk focused on the ABCs of Good Journalism and the ins and outs of news writing which established the fundamentals.
Following Dr. Suerte Felipe was Dr. Ricky Rosales, an esteemed broadcast journalist, academic, and the current program head of the Communication and Media Program.
Dr. Rosales imparted invaluable and practical insights on effective news-gathering techniques and the importance of rigorous fact-checking.
A lively Q&A session ensued, during which attendees posed questions pertaining to the discussions, all of which were answered fervently by the speakers.
Later in the workshop, Centro Dalumat’s associate editor and senior opinion editor Vivien Fajatin gave an insightful and engaging talk on Opinion Writing, sharing practical tips for effective writing.
The sessions continued with Lexine Athena Cruz, acting editor-in-chief and junior feature editor of Centro Dalumat, delivering a comprehensive dialogue on feature writing, offering valuable insights on article development, and distinguishing between opinion and feature pieces.
As a culminating activity, aimed at putting campus journalists’ skills to the test, a hands-on writing focusing on feature writing techniques took place.
Also, plans for the return of the university’s student publication were discussed at the event by USC president Cheska Carreon and secretary Kyle Crispino, extending their invitation to the attendees.
Concluding the event was the introduction of the newly-appointed heads of the Centro Dalumat.
