The Communication and Media Society (COMMSOC) held its annual Communication and Media festival face-to-face last May 3 at Centro Escolar University-Manila.
This event from the program centered on the theme, “The New Frontier: Diverse Innovation in Media.”
In partnership with EdukSine, a local streaming platform supporting independent films, the program began with a film show featuring the work of Director Zig Madamba Dulay titled “Bagahe” which talks about Mercy, an OFW, bringing a different ‘baggage’ coming home.
The event was also graced by the founder of EdukSine, Ms. Karen Jane Salutan, who took part in the roundtable discussion after the film showing.
Salutan shared her life experiences and imparted her knowledge about the film industry in the country.
She also encouraged students to make more films that focus on media education to combat the proliferation of misinformation in the country.
The second half of the festivity continued with journalism-related activities, which included a workshop for television news script writing and news reporting simulation.
Julianne Alerta, the head writer of Balitang Centro, led the workshop, where she talked about the basics of news writing. An interactive activity came after, which tested the audience’s ability to write crucial parts of the news.
Meanwhile, Symoun Ong, the anchor of Balitang Centro, taught students how to present news with the help of some tips and his actual experience in the field.
After his talk, the event ended with a simulation wherein students tried to do live reporting.
