Armed with their mobile application prototype called MILES, five Filipino students bested 96 groups from 40 countries in UNESCO’s Fifth Global Media and Information Literacy Youth Hackathon.
In a notice of award sent October 10, 2023, Team AGOS Philippines (Achieving Global Oneness Through Synergy) was announced as one of the four winning groups that will be traveling to Jordan on October 22.
The Hackathon is one of the activities on the Global Media and Information Literacy Week Youth Agenda Forum. This provides a venue for students and youth organizations to participate in the global efforts towards media and information literacy by designing solutions to address social challenges.
The members of the group are Charlene Grace Macapagal (CEU-Malolos), Marie Francheska Hermosa (CEU-Manila), and Alexene Faith Tomate (CEU-Makati).
The three Escolarians were joined by Ian Lumanog (Lyceum of the Philippines University-Cavite) and Kurt Alec Mira (University of Sto. Tomas) in producing a mobile application prototype.
“This is a project that is very close to our hearts,” said Francheska Hermosa, project team lead.
Project MILES, which stands for Media and Information Literacy Empowerment Space, is one of the winning entries that will be presented in the Global MIL Week 2023 in the Dead Sea, Jordan.
“Considering all factors, we came up with a mobile application that is sustainable and impactful,” Jose Cris Sotto, Communication and Media faculty member and adviser, shares, adding that “gamification is an important component in order to incentivize the continuous usage of the app.”
The concepts of the winning groups will be presented to potential investors in Jordan.
In an interview in his radio program, Communication and Media Head Ricky Rosales congratulated the delegation.
“We are thankful for the support of our dear professors in this journey,” Macapagal said in an interview.
